Pizza delivery near me: how zones, timing and cost actually work
Searching for delivery near you returns a store. It does not tell you why that store, how long you will really wait, or what the order costs once the fee and the tip are counted. This page covers all three.
Why that store, and not the closer one
A delivery zone is a map of what one store can reach quickly enough for the food to still be worth eating. That makes it a map of driving time, and driving time is shaped by geography, not geometry.
The consequence is zones that look arbitrary until you drive them. A store two miles away across a freeway may not serve you while one three miles away on your side does. In Jacksonville the river does the same job; in Seattle it is the hills and the water; in San Diego, canyons split neighbourhoods that share a border on the map.
This matters for your wallet as well as your wait. Store assignment decides which offers you see, because franchisees opt into promotions individually. If a nationally advertised deal is not on your store page, your store is not running it — and no coupon code will change that.
One practical note: in suburban areas it is quite common for two stores to serve the same address, and their deal lists genuinely differ. Checking both takes thirty seconds and occasionally saves a few dollars.
What actually determines your wait
Almost everyone assumes the wait is about distance. It is mostly about queue depth. A store on a Friday at half past six has fifteen orders ahead of yours and a fixed number of ovens; the drive is often the shortest part of the process.
The four things that genuinely move the number:
- How many orders are ahead of you. The single biggest factor, and the one the tracker never shows.
- How many stops are on the driver's run. Drivers carry several orders per trip. If yours is third, it has been in the car through two other deliveries.
- Where you sit in the zone. An address at the edge is a twenty-five minute round trip rather than an eight minute one.
- Weather and staffing. Snow, storms and a short-handed closing crew all stretch windows, and none of it is visible from outside.
Practical version: twenty-five to forty-five minutes is the normal range, and on a weekend peak adding ten to fifteen minutes to whatever you are quoted is realistic. Ordering at 5:15pm instead of 6:30pm gets you the same food faster and in better condition for the same money.
What delivery really costs
The gap between carryout and delivery is not just the fee. It is three separate charges pointing the same way — and the largest of them is the one people never count.

Read down that table and the single pizza that costs eight dollars collected costs about seventeen delivered — a gap of roughly nine dollars, which is typical of the eight-to-twelve range we see across stores. Note that a quarter of that gap is the pizza price itself, even after applying the best delivery offer: flat-rate carryout deals simply do not exist in delivery mode, and most people never see them because the site defaults to delivery.
None of which means you should never pay for delivery. It means the decision is worth making deliberately: if the store is four minutes away, collecting is close to free money. If it is fifteen minutes each way, the saving has already been consumed by fuel and your own time.
The five-point delivery checklist
- Set delivery or carryout before you build the basket — carryout-only pricing never appears in delivery mode.
- Sign in first. Rewards points do not attach to guest orders and cannot be added afterwards.
- Read your store deals page before the menu, then build from inside the deal tile.
- Put the gate code, buzzer and unit number in the instructions field — the last fifty feet is where deliveries fail, not the drive.
- Judge the offer on the checkout total, not the tile price.

Enter your full street address into the official store finder rather than a postcode. Zone boundaries frequently run through the middle of a postcode, so a postcode search returns a best guess while a full address returns the actual answer, including whether your street is carryout only.
It varies enormously by market. Dense city zones can be under a mile because a driver covers ground slowly; suburban zones routinely extend several miles because the roads support it. The zone is drawn around driving time, not distance.
Commonly twenty-five to forty-five minutes, with the wide part of that range determined by how deep the order queue is rather than how far the driver travels. On a Friday evening peak, adding ten to fifteen minutes to any quoted estimate is realistic.
Usually, and it is set store by store to reflect what a run costs that store. Dense, slow-moving zones tend to carry higher minimums because a driver completes fewer deliveries an hour there.
Carryout, by commonly eight to twelve dollars on a single large pizza. That figure combines the delivery fee, the tip and the lower flat price that carryout-only offers apply to the pizza itself. The saving narrows in percentage terms on a large multi-item order.
At most chains, no. It is a store charge covering insurance, vehicle costs and operating overhead. Drivers are paid a wage plus tips, which is why reducing a tip because a fee was charged takes money from the driver rather than the company.
