Approximate for a plain base, per slice of a large cut into eight. Each topping adds roughly 10–40 calories per slice.
Hand tossed is the crust most people mean when they say pizza: a medium-thickness base with a raised outer edge, soft in the centre, chewy at the rim. It is the default on almost every chain menu and the crust every deal assumes unless it says otherwise.
How the pricing works
You start at the cheese pizza price and each topping adds a fixed amount, which scales with the size of the pizza. Toppings on an extra-large cost more than the same toppings on a small, because there is more of them. This is where build-your-own gets expensive: three toppings on a large routinely pushes past the price of a specialty pizza that has five.
Where it fits on value
Excellent inside a deal, poor outside one. A two-topping build-your-own is the standard qualifying item for mix-and-match bundles and flat-price carryout offers, and at that fixed price it is the best value on the menu. At full menu price with four toppings, it is the worst.
Ordering notes
Count your toppings before you check out. The single most common way people overspend on chain pizza is adding a fourth and fifth topping to a build-your-own without noticing that a specialty pizza with those same toppings would have cost less.
Free modifications worth knowing: light or extra sauce, light cheese, well-done bake, and cutting into squares rather than wedges. None of these cost anything and all of them change the pizza.
